How Much Water Should I Drink A Day?

How Much Water Should I Drink a Day?

Each day, your body loses water through breathing, sweating, urinating, and bowel movements. For your body to function, it's crucial to replenish this lost water by consuming foods and drinks with high water content. According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the recommended daily fluid intake is approximately:

  • 15.5 cups (124 fluid ounces) for adult men
  • 11.5 cups (92 fluid ounces) for adult women

  • These target amounts are definitely helpful and ideal, but other factors need to be considered:

    Body Size / Weight

To be clear, and we think this may be obvious, a huge factor for necessary water intake is your size / weight. Based on average sizes and weights, adults will need more water than adolescents, and adolescents will need more water than smaller children.

    Exercise

Engaging in any exercise that makes you sweat requires water intake to compensate for water loss. It's essential to hydrate before, during, and after a workout.

    Climate / Environmental Factors

Hot or humid weather conditions and climate can lead to above average perspiration, requiring additional fluid consumption. Dehydration is also a risk in high-altitude environments.

    Overall Health Condition

Illnesses such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea result in fluid loss. It's best to consume more water or follow specific medical advice for rehydration solutions. Certain health conditions like bladder infections and urinary tract stones may also require larger fluid intake.

    Pregnancy / Breastfeeding

Pregnant mothers and breastfeeding individuals typically need extra fluids to maintain proper hydration levels. After all, you’re hydrating for two!
